Users Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such treatments should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
